UPDATE: The Council is aiming the transfer to Reel Cinemas to take place in early April 2009. There may be a short period where Hull Screen will not operate prior to the transfer, as it is not possible to establish yet a precise date for the transfer. The University of Lincoln requires a 3 months notice to be given.
'Happy New Year! Let's hope this year sees the Screen move forward to a new home and become re-established as a successful arts cinema.
Subscriptions Please!
We need your annual 2009 subscriptions now (£5 waged, £2.50 students and unwaged) to meet our expenses – postage, copying, website fees, internet connections and so on.
We regret that if subscriptions are unpaid by 1st March 2009 we can no longer send information by post or email, though you will be retained on our list of supporters.
Those who have joined FHS latterly, in November/December 2008, and who have paid their subscription need not pay again for 2009, but please would you inform us of this on the form so that we can mark you off as paid.
As many of you will know, 9th January marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Screen in its original form; however, a celebration of this will take place later in the year, probably early spring, when we hope to combine this with the move to our new home.
For those of you who read this website for the first time, a reminder of the current situation of Hull Screen: Hull City Council's Cabinet decided in their meeting on the morning of Monday 24th of November to accept the proposals put over by Mr Kaylash Suri, the owner of Reel Cinemas, to run Hull Screen with a subsidy from the City Council at their complex in the St. Stephen's Shopping Centre.
If any member has any comment to make, please email them to us or post them on the Comments/Message board of our website.
Very best wishes,
Susan Harr/Val Brady/Pablo Luis González

With a hugely positive response from all those who have already submitted films to GLIMMER, there’s only one month left to make sure that you film has been entered into one of the best and brightest film festivals in the UK.
Glimmer Director Laurence Boyce said:
“There’s not much time left and we urge anyone who has a suitable film to send it in as soon as possible. The quality of entries has already been very high, and we look forward to receiving films before the deadline of February 6th. And, remember, we have a unique system whereby all those who submit decide how much they want to pay in entry fees – if they want to pay entry fees at all. So send in your films your now for the chance to be involved in one of the most popular film festivals in the UK,”
Full information on submitting films to Glimmer: The 7th Hull International Short Film Festival and the entry form can be found by going to www.hullfilm.co.uk. Entry fees are optional with our unique system allowing filmmakers to choose how much they wish to pay to enter the festival,

DUANE HOPKINS' BETTER THINGS BROUGHT TO HULL SCREEN BY HULL FILM
A review by Pablo Luis González
Duane Hopkins' Better Things, British film making at its best, was shown in an exclusive pre-release screening at Hull Screen. Set in the so-called idyllic setting of the Cotswolds, the film follows a group of youngsters, the tribulations of first love gone wrong, drug taking as a liberation from the claustrophobic environment of rural life; and an old couple still sulking about events that happened a long time ago, events that “cannot be forgotten”. Better Things is fuelled by ...

Membership Fees:
FHS membership fees are being used primarily for publicity as there is now NO money for this in the Screen's funding. Thus, payment of fees is crucial.
Those who pay at any time during this year will be paid up until lst January 2009 also. If you have not paid your membership, please send cheque for £5 (waged), or £2.50 (students and unwaged) made out to Friends of Hull Screen, to:

University of Lincoln
George Street
HULL
HU1 3BW.
We need to keep the funds at a healthy level for postage/copying and helping to publicise the Screen, which matter we have been discussing this afternoon.
New members continue to join FHS, and we hope that many of you will become active in what is going to be a challenging period ahead (see below.)
Requests
We would also encourage FHS members to request films, as the Front of House Manager is very willing to obtain films for special showings. We hope to introduce an extra night per week in the future for such screenings.
Also we shall be organising a special event to mark the founding of the Screen, in its original form, in the next couple of months.
Draw Winners
There are TWO FREE TICKET WINNERS each month. This month’s winners will receive their tickets shortly by post.
Hull Cinema Group
Hull Cinema Group organises monthly social meets to see films at Hull Screen as a group.
This is proving very popular, with regular cinema attendances.
Please get in touch with me if you are interested in coming along. Films and times will vary and suggestions will be welcome. The meets are open to anyone of any age. See full post at the Comments Board.
At present the group meets usually on Monday or Tuesday evening, to have a drink then see a movie (variety of genres) at one of the mainstream cinemas (normally Vue Cinema at Princes Quay). Please contact Cate if you would like information about these meets also.

Stick and Stones
Exploring one of the many corners of cyberspace I found this little gem, a video made at Kelvin High School, which was screened at Hull Screen. Starring Sarah Barker and produced by Luke Patrick. It has a message; however, it is worth viewing it. The editor.

What is HULL SCREEN?
Hull Screen is an independent cinema, currently run by the city council and showing “art house” foreign and “indie” films.
Recently, for instance, the Screen showed the remarkable Argentinian movie XXY, with its bold theme and outstanding performances, and Mongol, the epic story of the rise of Genghis Khan.
You will see films at the Screen which you will not catch at the local commercial cinemas. A "must" for students engaged in Media/Film courses, the Screen is a treat for all discerning cinema-goers!
Where is the Screen?
It is sited in the university of Lincoln building on George Street in the city centre, near to Hull College and Pozition night dub. For directions/map follow this link.
Who are Friends of Hull Screen?
We are a support group acting as a pressure group on the council to keep the Screen open. The more people that use the Screen, the greater the hope of its survival.
Benefits of membership: Advance screenings sent to you via email/post regular newsletter; free tickets prize draw monthly!
