We regret that there is still no news on the future of the Screen and/or possible transfer. However, one way or another the matter has to be resolved by the Council Cabinet meeting in October - we hope...
If any member has any suggestion or comment to make, please email them to us or post them in the Comments/Message board of our website.
We have decided to offer an amnesty at this late date in the year; those who have still not paid the modest subscription will continue to receive newsletters and programmes until 1st January, 2009, when the membership fee becomes due again. (There will, of course, be reduced fees for the unemployed, incapacitated and students.)
We are appealing for any programmes, posters, tickets, membership cards and other memorabilia from the last forty years of Hull Screen’s history. These materials would be strictly on loan for use on the web site, and their return guaranteed.
We have successfully leafleted the University of Hull and Hull College campuses, where students demonstrated a great interest in Hull Screen.
We hope to have a stall in shopping centres later in the year.

The University of Hull has just launched a MA in British Cinema, which seems to be the only one of ikts kind in the UK, according to Prof Neil Sinyard. It had good publicity in the Hull Daily Mail, The Guardian and the Times Higher Ed. One of the selling points, of course, is the huge contribution people from Hull have made to the British film industry, which it is doubtful whether any other city in the country could match.
Recruitment for the University's BA Film Studies programme has risen dramatically. The First Year intake this year is double what it was last year (68 as compared with 34) which seems to be the highest percentage increase of any subject area in the University. Prof Sinyard sees no reason why this upward trend should not continue: in his view- and it is shared by others- they have the best Film department in the area. It would be bizarre to contemplate closing the local arts cinema at the very time when the local University is dramatically expanding in terms of its Film Studies recruitment.
FHS membership fees are being used primarily for publicity as there is now NO money for this in the Screen's funding. Thus, payment of fees is crucial.
Those who pay at any time during this year will be paid up until lst January 2009 also. If you have not paid your membership, please send cheque, made out to Friends of Hull Screen, to:

We need to keep the funds at a healthy level for postage/copying and helping to publicise the Screen, which matter we have been discussing this afternoon.
New members continue to join FHS, and we hope that many of you will become active in what is going to be a challenging period ahead (see below.)
There are TWO FREE TICKET WINNERS each month. This month’s winners will receive their tickets shortly by post.
We would also encourage FHS members to request films, as the Front of House Manager is very willing to obtain films for special showings. We hope to introduce an extra night per week in the future for such screenings. Also we shall be organising a special event to mark the founding of the Screen, in its original form, in January next year.
Watch out for the next edition of HULLFIRE, the University of Hull Student Union's magazine, for an article on Hull Screen by Tanya Haider.
Hull Cinema Group organises monthly social meets to see films at Hull Screen as a group.
This is proving very popular, with regular cinema attendances.
Please get in touch with me if you are interested in coming along. Films and times will vary and suggestions will be welcome. The meets are open to anyone of any age. See full post at the Comments Board.
At present the group meets usually on Monday or Tuesday evening, to have a drink then see a movie (variety of genres) at one of the mainstream cinemas (normally Vue Cinema at Princes Quay). Please contact Cate if you would like information about these meets also.

Hull Screen is an independent cinema, currently run by the city council and showing “art house” foreign and “indie” films.
Recently, for instance, the Screen showed the remarkable Argentinian movie XXY, with its bold theme and outstanding performances, and Mongol, the epic story of the rise of Genghis Khan.
You will see films at the Screen which you will not catch at the local commercial cinemas. A "must" for students engaged in Media/Film courses, the Screen is a treat for all discerning cinema-goers!
It is sited in the university of Lincoln building on George Street in the city centre, near to Hull College and Pozition night dub. For directions/map follow this link.
We are a support group acting as a pressure group on the council to keep the Screen open. The more people that use the Screen, the greater the hope of its survival.
Benefits of membership: Advance screenings sent to you via email/post regular newsletter; free tickets prize draw monthly!
