UPDATE:   The contract between Hull City Council and Reel Cinemas was signed on Monday 8th of June. Hull Screen has finally been transferred to Reel Cinemas. We expect the re-opening to be at any moment now.

We will inform you about the official re-opening of our beloved cinema as soon as we learn the actual date and further details. The equipment is already in place at Reel, Screen 2, and indeed was used for the recent Glimmer Film Festival held there.

Meanwhile, could members please submit any ideas and suggestions about special membership offers, ‘deals’ and the kind of films you would like to see, so that we can present to Mr. Suri? Please email them to us or post them on the Comments/Message board of our website, or below.

SUBSCRIPTIONS PLEASE!  We need your annual 2009 subscriptions now (£5 waged, £2.50 students and unwaged) to meet our expenses – postage, copying, website fees, internet connections and so on.

We regret that if subscriptions are unpaid by 1st March 2009 we can no longer send information by post or email, though you will be retained on our list of supporters.

WHAT DO THE MEMBERS WANT FROM FRIENDS OF HULL SCREEN?

As the transfer date of Hull Screen to be incorporated at Reel Cinemas approaches, although it will keep its own identity (perhaps something along the lines of Reel Cinemas incorporating Hull Screen), and some of the functions that Friends of Hull Screen has carried out during the past year will become redundant as publicity for the cinema will improve, added to the information on films and programme that this website gives, the following question has been raised:

What would the members of Friends of Hull Screen would like for us to do?

Some ideas are already circulating, such as having film showings for members only, a number of free tickets during the year, concessionary rates, and others. We would like to know what you, our loyal supporters, want from your membership.

You can write, email or phone to us. You can also post your ideas on our Comment board (it doesn't require subscription) or on our Forum (subscription required).

OLD CINEMAS OF HULL

These photographs were exhibited at Hull Screen at the Central Library during the mid 90s for several years. These show only a small number of cinemas that flourished in Hull between the wars. Some were bombed during the blitz, others succumbed to the advance of our modern times.

All photographs © Barry Thompson unless otherwise indicated. Friends of Hull Screen wishes to thank Barry for having lent these images.

Membership Fees:

FHS membership fees are being used primarily for publicity as there is now NO money for this in the Screen's funding.  Thus, payment of fees is crucial.

Those who have joined FHS latterly, in November/December 2008, and who have paid their subscription need not pay again for 2009, but please would you inform us of this on the form so that we can mark you off as paid.

If you have not paid your membership, please send cheque for £5 (waged), or £2.50 (students and unwaged) made out to Friends of Hull Screen, to:

We need to keep the funds at a healthy level for postage/copying, website, and helping to publicise the Screen, which matter we have been discussing this afternoon.

New members continue to join FHS, and we hope that many of you will become active in what is going to be a challenging period ahead.

Film making workshops : Café Society

Sidmouth Primary School - HullCafesociety.org runs filmmaking workshops in the community working particularly with young people in youth clubs, adventure playgrounds, schools, and education centres.

We think digital filmmaking is a magical tool to enhance both learning and teaching. Our school programmes are designed to complement the national curriculum and to offer real tangible learning outcomes that aim to inspire and motivate pupils and teachers.

Each project is different depending on the type of group, genre and theme but all the workshops we run take the students through the filmmaking process from start to finish. They learn about storytelling, scriptwriting, storyboarding, sound, camera, acting and editing. At the end of each project a screening is held and students are given a DVD of their film.

Stick and StonesExploring one of the many corners of cyberspace I found this little gem, a video made at Kelvin High School, which was screened at Hull Screen. It has a message; however, it is worth viewing it. The editor.

Art kills: Did Tarkovsky die as a result of filming "The Stalker"?

still from The Stalker"Sound recordist Vladimir Sharun believes the deaths from cancer of Tarkovsky (in 1986), his wife Larissa and Anatoly Solonitsyn (who plays the Writer) were all due to contamination from a chemical plant upstream from the set." - The Guardian

Hull Cinema Group

I run a friendly, informal social group that meets twice a month, once to see a 'mainstream' film and once to see a film at Hull Screen. It is totally free, no commitment necessary - people just turn up as and when they can/want. There is a mix of ages and I've had some very positive feedback about how welcome new people have felt when they come to a meet.

This is proving very popular, with regular cinema attendances.

I send messages and invites via our message board, which is becoming more and more lively - go to Yahoo!Groups and search for Hull Cinema Group (or see this website's homepage). Or let me know if you don't have a computer/internet access as possibly something can be arranged that could keep you in the loop.

Please get in touch with me if you are interested in coming along. Films and times will vary and suggestions will be welcome. The meets are open to anyone of any age. See full post at the Comments Board.

At present the group meets usually on Monday or Tuesday evening, to have a drink then see a movie (variety of genres) at one of the mainstream cinemas (normally Vue Cinema at Princes Quay). Please contact Cate if you would like information about these meets also.

Best wishes - Cate Allison.

What is HULL SCREEN?

Hull Screen is an independent cinema, currently run by the city council and showing “art house” foreign and “indie” films.

Recently, for instance, the Screen showed the remarkable Argentinian movie XXY, with its bold theme and outstanding performances, and Mongol, the epic story of the rise of Genghis Khan.

You will see films at the Screen which you will not catch at the local commercial cinemas. A "must" for students engaged in Media/Film courses, the Screen is a treat for all discerning cinema-goers!

Where is the Screen?

Hull Screen is moving to Reel Cinemas, in St. Stephen's shopping centre. New directions to come soon.

Who are Friends of Hull Screen?

We are a support group acting as a pressure group on the council to keep the Screen open. The more people that use the Screen, the greater the hope of its survival.

Benefits of membership: Advance screenings sent to you via email/post regular newsletter; free tickets prize draw monthly!
