VOLUNTEER REQUIRED TO EDIT AND MANAGE THE FRIENDS OF HULL SCREEN WEBSITE

Due to Pablo's forthcoming resignation, a volunteer is needed to run the Friends of Hull Screen website from January 1st, 2010. On its current format, the following skills are required:

However, the future shape of the website should be discussed within the Steering Committee, so that the person who takes this task would be expected to join it.

PLEASE NOTE that the Steering Group of FHS does not make the final choice of films to be shown, although we do put forward all members’ suggestions. Reel management has the final say. Therefore, if you have comments or complaints, please make them to Muhammad Faisal by email muhammad@reelcinemas.co.uk or even directly to Mr. K.C. Suri at kcsuri@reelcinemas.co.uk.

Israeli film 'Lebanon' wins top prize at Venice Film Festival

"Lebanon," an Israeli film that recounts Israel's 1982 invasion of its northern neighbor through soldiers' eyes, won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival Saturday.

The festival jury announced the Golden Lion and other prizes on the last day of the 11-day international festival.

The anti-war film, directed by Samuel Maoz, tells the story of paratroopers searching a hostile town. The conflict is seen through the binocular-aided eyes of soldiers in an armored vehicle.

RITA SINGS THE BLUES

"Sita Sings the Blues is a musical, animated personal interpretation of the Indian epic the Ramayana. The aspect of the story that I focus on is the relationship between Sita and Rama, who are gods incarnated as human beings, and even they can't make their marriage work." - Nina Paley

Film making workshops : Café Society

Sidmouth Primary School - HullCafesociety.org runs filmmaking workshops in the community working particularly with young people in youth clubs, adventure playgrounds, schools, and education centres.

We think digital filmmaking is a magical tool to enhance both learning and teaching. Our school programmes are designed to complement the national curriculum and to offer real tangible learning outcomes that aim to inspire and motivate pupils and teachers.

Each project is different depending on the type of group, genre and theme but all the workshops we run take the students through the filmmaking process from start to finish. They learn about storytelling, scriptwriting, storyboarding, sound, camera, acting and editing. At the end of each project a screening is held and students are given a DVD of their film.

Hull Cinema Group

I run a friendly, informal social group that meets twice a month, once to see a 'mainstream' film and once to see a film at Hull Screen. It is totally free, no commitment necessary - people just turn up as and when they can/want. There is a mix of ages and I've had some very positive feedback about how welcome new people have felt when they come to a meet.

This is proving very popular, with regular cinema attendances.

I send messages and invites via our message board, which is becoming more and more lively - go to Yahoo!Groups and search for Hull Cinema Group (or see this website's homepage). Or let me know if you don't have a computer/internet access as possibly something can be arranged that could keep you in the loop.

Please get in touch with me if you are interested in coming along. Films and times will vary and suggestions will be welcome. The meets are open to anyone of any age. See full post at the Comments Board.

At present the group meets usually on Monday or Tuesday evening, to have a drink then see a movie (variety of genres) at one of the mainstream cinemas (normally Vue Cinema at Princes Quay). Please contact Cate if you would like information about these meets also.

Best wishes - Cate Allison.

What is HULL SCREEN?

Hull Screen is an independent cinema, currently run by Reel Cinemas and showing “art house” foreign and “indie” films.

Recently, for instance, the Screen showed the remarkable Argentinian movie XXY, with its bold theme and outstanding performances, and Lemon Tree, a memorable and compassionate Israeli film on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

You will see films at the Screen which you will not catch at the local commercial cinemas. A "must" for students engaged in Media/Film courses, the Screen is a treat for all discerning cinema-goers!

Where is the Screen?

Hull Screen has moved to Reel Cinemas, in St. Stephen's shopping centre.

Who are Friends of Hull Screen?

We are a support group acting as a pressure group to develop the Screen. The more people that use the Screen, the greater the hope of its survival.

Benefits of membership: Advance screenings sent to you via email/post regular newsletter; reduced rates for any film shown by Hull Screen at any day or time of the week; monthly members only film previews, free tickets prize draw monthly!
